High School Math Classes for Students with Dyscalculia

Honora Wall

About 8% of the population-- more than 1 million high school students in the United States-- have dyscalculia. Many of these students have serious difficulties earning enough math credits to graduate. They may take summer school classes, online classes, repeat grades, or be kept out of math classes all together. This leads to fewer college acceptances, lower college graduation rates, and a lingering belief that they simply can't do math.

EduCalc Learning is changing this experience with online math classes designed specifically for dyscalculia. "We integrated 20 years of teaching experience with the published research on dyscalculia and neurodivergence to create classes that work," says Dr. Honora Wall, owner and founder of EduCalc Learning. Currently available classes include Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Personal Financial Literacy, and Chemistry. The courses are popular with home school students across the country.

Thanks to a new initiative with The Harvey Academy in Tequesta, Florida, the classes may also earn high school credit. Students who complete the class receive an official transcript from The Harvey Academy, accredited by the FCIS. Students can register online for full-year or one-semester courses.

Each class meets all required standards for high school courses. Students can complete work at their own pace, and since the instructional design is made for neurodivergent students, outside help is rarely needed. "For the first time ever, my son logs on without arguing, stays on pace with the work, and says he understands the math!" says one mom whose son has taken Algebra 2, Geometry, and Chemistry through EduCalc Learning.
